Noodle House

Final Scene (01.2010)

All stills and textures, shown below, were custom created, by myself, for this scene.  Some items were first modeled, then deformed to create a more stylized feel, including the lanterns and roofs.

This scene is my current project and was inspired from  the art of Kung Fu Panda. I was impressed by how well Dreamworks beautifully created the environmental art for the movie and their amazing attention to detail; from the trees, landscapes, architecture. I have created an Asian inspired scene before and had wanted to create additional Asian-inspired scenes, but didn’t have an idea of what until I saw the noodle house from the movie. The noodle house is fun, interesting, and allowed for my own interpretation.

I started this project with screen captures from the Kung Fu Panda movie and with art from the Kung Fu Panda art book. I studied the design, composition, geometry, and style of the scene then decided that I would start with building the exterior first. I concentrated on modeling the exterior shell and then continued to add detail to the noodle house including the windows, window shutters, trim, roofs, door, and counter space.  I also added a courtyard wall that had undergone a few revisions in itself.

The interior,  including the bowls, wok, tea cups, knives, cutting boards,  and baskets, were modeled once the exterior was near completion. I tried to adjust each piece to give it a more stylized, and less uniform, feel. Finishing touches were added, including the lanterns, outside tables, exterior wall windows, and bamboo. I then went ahead and removed any polygons that weren’t showing.

All textures were hand painted using Photoshop.  Textures were applied to the models, then rendered. A final render was created and a paint over was done to add more ‘character’ to the scene.

The Scout

The idea for creating weapons for the scout came from a competition that was held in conjunction with Polycount.  I wanted to create new ranged and melee weapons that would fit the Scout’s personality, per the contest rules.  Though I did not enter the contest due to time constraints, I did want to see this project through.

The Sling Shot

To me, the Scout represents a mischievous and fun loving, kid at heart class. I thought about what kind of toys a boy might have used in his youth and the sling shot came to mind.  I wanted my slingshot to be simple and classic so that people could immediately identify with it.  After sketching a concept out, I modeled the sling shot in 3ds Max.  The textures were painted to represent the painting style of Team Fortress 2.

The Paddle

The contest required a melee weapon for the same class used for the ranged weapon.  Again, I thought about the different toys and sports gear that a boy would have played with during his childhood.  I knew I wanted a blunt object, kind of reminiscent of the baseball bat.  I finally came up with the idea of a large paddle and thought it would be amusing if the Scout ran around with it.
